Dexter es una serie de suspenso que narra la historia de un hombre extraño llamado Dexter Morgan. Cuando era niño, Dexter (Michael C. Hall, A dos metros bajo tierra), fue maltratado y abandonado por sus padres, ahora es un exitoso e importante forense patológico... pero bajo su carismática personalidad, se esconde una terrible verdad. Dexter ha canalizado sus innatas necesidades homicidas en una segunda profesión que guarda celosamente en secreto: buscar, dar caza y asesinar brutalmente a despiadados criminales que han conseguido evitar caer en las garras de la ley. Huérfano desde los cuatros años y albergando un traumático secreto, Dexter es adoptado por Harry Morgan (James Remar, Blade: Trinity), un oficial de policía de Miami, que conoce las tendencias homicidas de Dexter y enseña a su hijo a canalizar su horripilante pasión por la vivisección humana, y dedicarla a un objetivo mucho más constructivo, así como a saber cubrir su rastro y no dejar pruebas de sus actos.
